Japanese Flowering Crabapple
| COMMON NAME | Japanese Flowering Crabapple |
| BOTANICAL NAME * | Malus floribunda |
| ZONE | 4-8 |
| SIZE | 15 – 20’ ht, 20 – 30’ wide. |
| FOLIAGE | Medium green leaves, turning yellow in the fall. |
| FLOWER | Buds are deep pink to red. Flowers open to pale pink, almost white, 1-1 ½”D, covering the tree. |
| FRUIT | Yellow and red, aging to almost completely red, 3/8”D. Because the fruit is so small, fewer berries actually make it to the ground. Squirrels enjoy the berries all winter, and then the Robins eat the rest in the spring. |
| GROWING CONDITIONS | Acid soil. Moist and well-drained. Full sun to partial shade. Best fruit set in full sun. |
| FAVORITE CULTIVARS | I love the straight species. Other than that, Malus ‘Prairiefire’ – new foliage is reddish maroon aging to dark green. Flowers start as red buds opening to dark purplish red flowers. Very disease resistant. ‘Royal Raindrops’ really caught my eye in the nursery. Similar attributes to ‘Prairiefire’. Is supposed to be an improved version. |
| NOTES | Somewhat Deer Resistant. |
