BOTANICAL NAME    Weigela florida

ZONE   4 – 8

SIZE      6-10’ HT, 9-12′ SP.   Can easily be pruned to maintain height around 3-5’ HT.  Allow for graceful arching branches.

FOLIAGE   The straight species has medium green leaves.  Some cultivars have burgundy foliage or variegated foliage.  See favorite cultivars…

‘Wine and Roses’ – burgundy
‘Fine Wine’ – burgundy
‘Variegata’ – green and white
‘Aureovariegata’ – green and yellow

FLOWER    Deep pink to pale pink depending upon the cultivar.

Blooms Apr – Jun.  Very showy.

GROWING CONDITIONS   Full Sun to Light Shade.  Tolerates most soils, even clay.  Prefers medium moisture, well-drained.

NOTES   Somewhat Deer Resistant.

BOTANICAL NAME   Fothergilla gardenii / Dwarf Fothergilla
Fothergilla major / Large Fothergilla

ZONE   4 – 8

SIZE      F. gardenii – generally 2-3’ HT & SP, though some have been seen 5-6’ HT
F. major – 6-10’ HT & 6’ SP

As you can see, there’s considerable overlap concerning the size.
F. gardenii ‘Suzanne’ – good, reliable dwarf, very dark green foliage
F. gardenii ‘Mt. Airy’ – usually grows to 5-6’ HT
F. major ‘Blue Shadow’ – very slow growing, easy to keep to 2-3’ HT, beautiful blue foliage

FOLIAGE   Usually dark green, somewhat glossy, stands up well to heat and humidity.  Fall foliage is outstanding, usually yellow, orange and red all on the same plant.

FLOWER   White, fragrant, bottlebrush flowers in early spring before the plant leafs out. 

FRUIT    Capsule, not showy.  Rarely observed.

GROWING CONDITIONS   Full Sun to Part Shade.  Prospers in acid soil, though seems to do well in a variety of soils as long as there is good drainage.  Full Sun will promote the best fall foliage.

NOTES   Somewhat Deer Resistant

BOTANICAL NAME: Juniperus virginiana ‘Taylor’

ZONE: 4 to 9

SIZE: 15 – 20’ HT, 3 – 4’ SP. Upright, narrow columnar.

FOLIAGE: Needle evergreen, silvery, blue-green foliage.

FLOWER: Non-flowering

GROWING CONDITIONS: Full Sun. Low maintenance. Drought tolerant. Will also tolerate Dry Soil, Rocky Soil, Black Walnut, Air Pollution.

NOTES: Deer Resistant.

FOLIAGE​     Medium green leaves. Deciduous.

FLOWER   Golden Yellow in late spring and quite showy

FRUIT   Upright, elongated bright orange berries.

GROWING CONDITIONS   Tolerant of many soil types.  Drought tolerant. Full Sun to Part Shade.  Can tolerate deep shade.  Does not like wet feet.

NOTES  The plant was bred specifically for the Cut Flower Industry.  Valued more for the berries than the flowers. Deer Resistant, Resistant to Rust.

COMMON NAME     Oleaster or Ebbing’s Silverberry

BOTANICAL NAME     Elaeagnus x ebbingei
                                                 Cross between Elaeagnus macrophylla x
                                                 Elaeagnus pungens

ZONE     7 – 9

SIZE     8-10 ft HT & SP Large, bushy, rounded shrub. Not quite as wild and wooly as Elaeagnus pungens.

FOLIAGE     Leathery elliptical leaves, lustrous dark green above, silver below. Evergreen – Semi-evergreen. No thorns.

FLOWER     Small, creamy white flowers in the fall. Not particularly showy, but are wonderfully fragrant.

FRUIT     Reddish brown drupes up to ½” long, ripen in spring. Fruits are edible.

GROWING CONDITIONS     Full Sun – Part Shade. Drought tolerant.

NOTES     Deer Resistant.
